Baby Wearing & Baby Carriers

Also known as “Baby Wearing”, holding your baby in a baby carrier has become extremely popular over the last couple decades. Although a fairly modern concept, Baby carriers have been around for many centuries, in many cultures baby carriers were a necessity and a way of life enabling mothers to work and carry their babies at the same time.

There are many benefits to baby carriers perhaps the number one benefit is that holding your baby close to you promotes attachment and bonding. Babies have a biological need to be held, they are held in the womb for nine months listening to a heartbeat and enjoying the rocking motion of movement. Ever notice that a crying baby stops crying when you pick him/her up and start a rocking motion? Research has shown that babies cry 40-50% less when they are being held, a held baby is a happy baby.

Another benefit to baby carriers is they enhance physical development by encouraging balance and by sitting up you are taking the pressure off the back of the baby’s head that is applied when a baby lies down or rest in a stroller.

Baby carriers also serve as a protection of your baby from the outside world. With your baby closer to your body you are keeping them warm and protected. You can shield them away from strangers trying to touch and play with your baby and possibly spread germs.
